MEET OUR SEPTEMBER DESSERT SPONSOR

Why “Happy Cakes”? Our original owner Sara's two-year-old son was (and still is) a huge fan of cake. Every time he saw a birthday cake, he would call them "Happy Cakes!" The perfect name for a bakery!  Who doesn't want to be happy? And who isn't happy when they're eating cake?

Jump ahead a decade or so, we are now “Happy Bakeshop” and we are still here, still happy and better than ever.

Since our beginning, we've seen our cupcakes on the TODAY SHOW, in magazines and at more parties, weddings and events than we can count.  And, as times have changed, so has our name and our location, but we still love to make the same amazing cupcakes (plus cakes, pies, cookies, French macarons, bars, and more!).

MEET OUR SEPTEMBER LIQUOR SPONSOR

About Lock + Co. Distilling

After years focused on business development, management, and client service, as well as giving back (Rick serves on Denver Museum of Nature & Science’s Giving Club Council; Owen on the board of nonprofit Geneva Glen Camp) both established successful careers. However, the alchemy of creating something new through careful selection helped both distill down their busy working lives. They extracted out one common element: celebrating the best of what life in Colorado has afforded.

This guiding principle, of sharing that experience, hit them while hand-cutting the aging discs from mature stands of aspen on family land flanking Central Colorado’s Mosquito Range. All the best days added up. The days spent camping, hiking, biking, fishing, snowboarding and skiing: that sunset toast after an unending day fly-fishing the Yampa, the warm nip from a flask on a cold chairlift, the laughter over a late-summer backyard game of cornhole. The unapologetic last howl at the moon.

Visit https://lockeandcodistilling.com/ to find the most convenient location to try a cocktail or to pick up a bottle.  Small batch, aspen aged, and Colorado raised with every aspen discs still being hand-cut from family property off of Westin Pass in the central mountains of Colorado. Whiskies made by two Colorado natives using the iconic Colorado aspen tree creating spirits that all have a taste like none other.

DBS Summer Social

Celebrate summer at the historic Grant-Humphreys Mansion for the Denver Business Series Summer Social on Thursday, July 27. With a beautiful outdoor courtyard adjacent to a park and the 30-rooom mansion meticulously restored with historic charm, we'll be eating and drinking the night away with professional colleagues.

The mansion was completed for James Benton Grant, the third Governor of Colorado, in 1902 at a cost of $35,000. He established the Omaha and Grant Smelting Company in Leadville in 1877 and upon his death in 1911 his widow sold the mansion in 1917 to lumber baron and oil tycoon Albert E. Humphreys. Eventually the Humphreys family left the mansion to the City of Denver and it was added to the National Registry of Historic Places in 1971.

There is parking for 20 cars at the mansion and then an additional 50 spaces after 5 pm in the parking lot across the street at 790 Pearl St, Denver.

Tickets are $50/person and includes light appetizers and two drink tickets. Tickets can be purchased here: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/dbs-summer-social-tickets-623227589497

MEET SOME OF OUR SUMMER SOCIAL SPONSORS:

Elevated Seltzer began as the nation's FIRST independent hard seltzer-only operation and are based out of Arvada, Colorado. Although their expertise was in craft beer, they decided to take a new approach to what we've always done and tap into the Hard Seltzer Market. Their hard seltzers have been rated as some of the highest quality seltzers in the nation in addition to winning a Gold & Silver Medal at the US Seltzer Championship. All seltzers are gluten free, sugar free, carb free, 100% natural and contain no GMOs or added sweeteners.

Owner and Chocolatier Liane PR of Colorado Cocoa Pod makes handcrafted chocolates and confections with an Asian twist! Her bonbons are delicious, beautiful, but never too pretty to eat and are well balanced and unique in flavor and design. Each chocolate is made locally in Denver, hand painted, made with Fair Trade and sustainable chocolate, and takes 3 days to make from start to finish. They make perfect gifts for any occasion and will satisfy your chocolate cravings!

Spice Trade Brewery & Kitchen is located in Greenwood Village Colorado and serves a seasonally rotating menu of globally inspired beer and eclectic, worldly street food. Born out of the Yak & Yeti Indian & Nepalese restaurant, Spice Trade has been brewing culinary driven and award-winning beer since 2008 prior to expanding into its flagship, stand-alone brewpub in 2020.

To provide you with sustainable, long-lasting energy, Kate’s Real Food begins every recipe with creamy, organic almond or peanut butter. We then mix in our delicious USDA-certified organic oats and brown rice crisps that give our bars their unique texture. And of course, for the perfect balance of natural sweetness, we fold in our USDA-certified organic honey. No matter your diet, lifestyle, or adventure, our snacks are a great option for anything from a midday pick-me up, to a worry-free meal replacement on those busy days.

For 60 years, Enstrom has handcrafted Almond Toffee with only the finest, freshest ingredients. We continue to build upon principles of determination, compassion and downright hard work. To us, family is everything and we have grown our own family to include our employees and consumers. DBS Virtual Townhall with Senator Cory Gardner

DISCLAIMER: DBS is non-political and non-partisan. We do NOT support or endorse any political candidates, and have never done so. We do see value in public discourse and civic action on the part of our individual members. Insofar as creating compelling events for business leaders in Colorado aligns with our mission, we will engage political leaders and candidates to speak to and with our organization on business and economic topics. Within these forums, we encourage our members to respectfully support (or oppose) proposed legislation and political candidates as it aligns with their personal opinions, values and priorities.

Hello Denver Business Series,

We are excited to announce that we have scheduled an intimate, albeit virtual, town hall with Senator Cory Gardner on October 29th from 11-11:45 am exclusively for DBS members.

We reached out to both major candidate’s campaigns (Governor Hickenlooper and Senator Gardner). Unfortunately, the Governor’s schedule won’t allow a pre-campaign event but we may be scheduling something similar post-election day - stay tuned!

We are soliciting questions from our members prior to the event. Ideally, we’d like to focus the conversation on Senator Gardner’s policy proposals and how they would impact Colorado businesses but all questions are welcome. Only presubmitted questions will be considered given the time constraints of the event so please make your submissions!

Please sign up for the event here:

This event is being put on by DBS at no cost to our members. We apologize for the late notice but scheduling was difficult so close to the election.

Please let us know if you have any questions.

Best,

Denver Business Series

Speakers:

Deborah Jordy was elected to the Bonfils-Stanton Foundation board in 2015. She is the Executive Director of Scientific & Cultural Facilities District, that distributes funds from a 1/10 of 1% sales and use tax to cultural facilities throughout the seven-county Denver, Colorado metropolitan area. Prior to SCFD, Deborah served as Executive Director of Colorado Business Committee for the Arts (CBCA). Deborah has played a prominent role in Colorado’s thriving art scene for the last 30 years, serving on the Denver Mayor’s Commission on Cultural Affairs, the Board of Directors of the Governor’s Residence Preservation Fund, Arts for Colorado, the Colorado Nonprofit Association and the Stapleton Public Arts Advisory Committee.

Dr. Jennifer R. Henneman, Associate Curator at the Petrie Institute of Western American Art at the Denver Art Museum, received her doctoral degree in 19th century British and American Art and Visual Culture at the University of Washington in 2016.  Her interdisciplinary transatlantic research, which has taken her from the wilds of the American West to the cosmopolitan streets of London and New York, reflects her own upbringing on a farm and cattle ranch in Montana and her interest in the dominant cultural and artistic spheres of the late Victorian era.

Tracy Weil is co-founder and president of RiNo Art District, and planted his roots in this growing community nearly 20 years ago. A lifelong painter, Weil's work is distinctive for its bold use of color and expressive, playful nature.  Known for his savvy in building community through the arts, Weil has fostered vibrant art districts throughout Colorado, including Lakewood and Aurora. A natural collaborator, Weil brings people and art together — with the tenacity of an advocate, the ease of a leader, and the heart of an artist.

Hayley Richardson has 20 years experience working in the arts and has been Director of The Dikeou Collection in Denver since 2016. From managing artist studios and curating exhibitions, to organizing various cultural programs and writing in-depth arts related articles for publication, Hayley has been involved in many facets of the art world. She received her MA in Art History and Museum Studies from the University of Denver and BA (cum laude) in Art History from the University of New Mexico. Though she has a wide range of interests and appreciation for all art, her academic work has primarily focused on American counterculture movements and Pre-Columbian art and architecture of Mexico and Central America.

Gretchen Kerr became Chief Operating Officer at the Children’s Museum in July 2010 after serving as the Vice President of Development and Communications. A member of the staff since 1998, she oversees education, guest services, fundraising and marketing. Most recently Gretchen played a significant role in the Museum’s capital campaign, leading her team in raising $16.3M for expansion and developing the organization’s master plan. Before joining the Museum, she worked for the American Cancer Society and the American Red Cross. Gretchen is a graduate of Leadership Denver, and has served on the board of Girls on the Run, LODO and the Young Philanthropists Foundation. She currently serves on the Association of Children’s Museums program committee. Gretchen also has two daughters that have grown up at the Children’s Museum, 12-year-old AnnaJane, and 15-year-old Zoe.

Molly Casey is a Co-Founder of NINE dot ARTS and works as Chief Curator, overseeing NINE dot ARTS curatorial teams and basically being Chief Vision Officer for all client engagements. Molly loves art for two primary reasons: it makes the world a little more sane and it tells the story of humankind throughout history. After living in Paris as a teen to further her appreciation of art and tiny cups of coffee, Molly enrolled at UC Santa Cruz (Go Banana Slugs!) but soon hightailed it back to her native Colorado home to finish her Sculpture degree at CU Denver. Molly supports the art community by: providing pro bono artist portfolio tutorials and serving as a guest juror for Open Studios at the University of Colorado at Denver and Boulder, being a Board member for Think 360 Arts for Learning, volunteering as a guest presenter at Boulder Art Association, and being a guest presenter and volunteer annual photo reviewer for Colorado Photographic Arts Center (CPAC).
