Speakers' Bios

Randy Thelen - Vice President of Economic Development at Downtown Denver Partnership - As VP of Economic Development, Randy is helping guide the growth of Denver’s economic base. Thelen works with financial institutions, developers and government representatives to attract & plan for new development, recruit & retain employers, promote Downtown as an innovative economic hub, and develop diverse housing options in Denver. Before joining Downtown Denver Partnership, Randy was SVP of Economic Development for the Greater Omaha Chamber of Commerce and the President of Lakeshore Advantage. An entrepreneur, Thelen has led economic development efforts in Western Michigan and played key roles in urban development projects in Downtown Detroit. Randy holds a bachelor's degree from Alma College and a master's degree in applied economics from Binghamton University.

Kate Watkins - Chief Economist for the Colorado General Assembly - Kate is the Chief Economist for the Colorado state legislature's nonpartisan research agency, Legislative Council Staff. Watkins leads a team of economists who provide economic research, revenue forecasting, and fiscal policy analyses that inform the state budget and school finance. While serving at the Denver branch of the Kansas City Fed, Kate worked with Alison Felix to author "The Impact of an Aging U.S. Population on State Tax Revenues". Earlier, she was a consultant with Booz Allen Hamilton. Watkins holds bachelor's and master's degrees in economics from the University of Denver. Kate earned a master's degree in sociology and is pursuing her doctorate at Cornell University. Her dissertation offers a sociology of financial literacy.

Richard Wobbekind - Executive Director of the Business Research Division, Associate Dean for Business & Government Relations & Senior Economist at the University of Colorado Boulder - The Executive Director of Business Research, Rich directs the annual development of CU Boulder's consensus forecast for Colorado's economy and produces the quarterly Leeds Business Confidence Index for Colorado. Wobbekind teaches graduate business courses in macroeconomics, public policy, entrepreneurship and managerial economics. Each year, Rich participates in the Kansas City Federal Reserve Bank Regional Economic Roundtable, and he is a member of the Governor's Revenue Estimating Advisory Committee. Wobbekind holds a bachelor's degree from Bucknell University, and masters and doctoral degrees in economics from the University of Colorado Boulder.
